Last week a friend of mine asked me to make a cake for her daughter’s 10th birthday. She was having a pineapple-themed party and sent me a picture of an adorable pineapple cake she wanted me to make. I was so excited to make this cake. How cute is that?!
I had some leftover fondant, so I couldn’t resist creating this Kawaii Fondant Pineapple Cupcake Tutorial for you all! I am having way to much fun with this pineapple theme.
You will need cupcakes, buttercream and some gumpaste and fondant to decorate these pineapples. I made 5 pineapples so I only needed 5 cupcakes.
I started out by making the pineapple leaves because they need to dry before you put them on your cupcakes. I used Wilton gumpaste to make these leaves. If you’re using gumpaste, you can let these leaves dry for a couple of hours and they should be ready to use.
If you’re not comfortable using gumpaste, you can use fondant. If using fondant, make sure to let the leaves dry for 24-48 hours until dry enough to handle.
You will need to color your gumpaste a light green color. I used Wilton Leaf Green gel color. Start out by spreading a little shortening all over your hands. Knead about a golf ball-size piece of gumpaste in your hands until soft.
I made 5 cupcakes for this tutorial, but if you’re making more than that, you will need to use more gumpaste to make more leaves.
Using a toothpick, add a small amount of green gel color to your gumpaste. Knead until the color is mixed in evenly. While you’re working with gumpaste, keep it covered as much as possible with plastic wrap or in a plastic sandwich bag because it dries very quickly.
Working with a smooth work surface, spread out a small amount of shortening over the area. I’m using the Wilton Roll and Cut Mat in the photos here.
Using a small rolling pin, roll out your gumpaste to about 1/8-inch thick. You will need a small, sharp, unserrated knife to cut leaves for the pineapples.
Using your knife, cut gumpaste out into small leaf shapes. You will need 4 leaves per cupcake. Using your knife or a fondant veining tool, make lines into both sides of your leaves for effect.
Using a small amount of water on a paint brush, paint the bottom part of each leaf. Place a toothpick into the bottom of the leaf and roll gumpaste around the toothpick.
Shape your leaves a little bit so that they are curling in different directions. Let leaves dry until you are able to handle them.
Using the method we used above for coloring the gumpaste, color a small amount of fondant black or dark brown using gel color. Roll out the fondant to approximately 1/8-inch thick. I used a tip #12 decorating tip to make the outlines of the eyes.
Roll out a small amount of white fondant. Using tip #5 decorating tip, cut out the white part of the eyes.
Once all of your fondant eyes are made, use a little bit of water to attach the whites of the eyes. For the tiny white dot on the eye, roll out small pieces of fondant in your fingers and attach with water and a toothpick.
Mold small pieces of black or brown fondant in your fingers to form the smiles.
Color a small amount of fondant pink for the flowers. Roll out a small amount of pink fondant. Using a small flower cutter, cut out the flowers for your cupcakes. Paint a small amount of water in the middle of each flower to stick the flower middle.
Using your fingers, roll out a small piece of fondant for the middle of each flower.
You will need a round cutter a little bit bigger than your cupcake. Measure the cutter around your cupcake to make sure it fits.
Color fondant yellow to make the tops of the cupcakes. Cut a circle for each cupcake.
Using a small diamond cutter, cut out diamond shapes into the fondant to look like a pineapple.
Frost cupcakes smooth with buttercream. Using a paper towel, lightly moisten each cupcake so that the fondant will stick to the buttercream.
Cover each cupcake with yellow fondant. Using green petal dust and a dry paint brush, outline the lines in the fondant.
Using a wire cutter, clip down each toothpick. Insert leaves into cupcakes to make the pineapple tops.
Paint green accents onto your leaves with a dry paint brush and some green petal dust.
Secure eyes, mouths and flowers onto cupcake with a small amount of water and a paint brush.
Tada! Here are the finished cupcakes.
